Lifestyle newborn session with awake 6 week old baby in parents arms

When Should You Book Lifestyle Newborn Photos?

One of the most common questions I receive from parents is:

“Is my baby too old for newborn photos?”

So let’s talk about it!

Whether your baby is 5 days old or 6 weeks old, your family’s story is still worth documenting beautifully. Every stage of newborn life brings something special, and lifestyle newborn photography allows space to capture your baby naturally and authentically exactly as they are.

That said, there are a few important things parents should know when deciding when to book their newborn session.

1. Booking Early Helps Secure Availability

I always recommend parents book their newborn photographer during the second trimester whenever possible.

Why?

Newborn photographers only take a limited number of due dates each month to allow flexibility once babies arrive. Booking early helps ensure:

Availability on your photographer’s calendar

Time to plan your session details

The opportunity to schedule within those first few weeks after birth if desired

If you love those sleepier, curlier newborn images, scheduling within the first 2–3 weeks is typically ideal.

2. Older Newborns Are More Awake & Alert

If your baby is already 5 or 6 weeks old, don’t panic! You absolutely did not miss your chance.

Lifestyle newborn sessions with older newborns are still incredibly meaningful and beautiful. The biggest difference is simply what to expect during the session.

At this age, babies tend to:

Stay awake longer

Make more eye contact

Stretch out more naturally

Be less likely to stay deeply asleep for posed or swaddled images

You may not get those sleepy curled-up poses often seen with very fresh newborns, but you will get genuine connection, sweet expressions, and beautiful moments with your family.

The sweet little guy in these photos was about 5 weeks ago at the time of the session. He still fell asleep for some sweet swaddled photos! I’m so glad his sweet mama reached out to scheduled this session!

3. Lifestyle Newborn Sessions Focus on Connection Over Perfection

One of the reasons I love lifestyle newborn photography is because it doesn’t rely heavily on stiff posing or forcing baby into unnatural positions.

Instead, the focus is on:

Your connection as a family

Natural cuddles and interactions

The way this season truly feels

Capturing your baby authentically

Whether your baby sleeps the entire session or stays awake watching everything around them, your gallery will still tell the story of these fleeting early days in a beautiful way.

The Most Important Thing? Don’t Wait Too Long

The newborn stage passes incredibly fast.

Tiny fingers, sleepy stretches, newborn yawns, and the way your baby fits perfectly in your arms begin changing before you even realize it.

There is no “perfect” age for newborn photos the most important thing is simply documenting this season before it’s gone.

Newborn sessions are booked on a limited basis each month to allow flexibility once babies arrive. If you’re expecting, now is the perfect time to reserve your spot.
